Newcastle United are keen on bringing Manchester City duo Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando to St James’ Park this summer, according to the Sun.

The newspaper reports that the Magpies are lining up a £28million double swoop for centre-back Mangala and midfield anchorman Fernando.

The Sun report that manager Rafael Benitez has joined Valencia in the £18million race for Mangala and is willing to sanction a £10million move for Fernando.

It said that City are willing to flog the duo, who arrived at City for combined fee of £54million in the summer of 2014.

Valencia are willing to pay £14million plus add-ons for the 26-year old defender, who has spent the entire season on loan at the Mestalla.

A source close to the Etihad is quoted in the Sun as saying: “Newcastle have shown a keen interest in Mangala, but Valencia are at the table.

“Valencia don’t want to pay the £20m City want for him though.”

The French defender never really adapted to life in the Premier League since joining Manchester City for a for £42million at the start of the 2015-16 campaign.

Mangala has made a total of 48 Premier League appearances and he has recorded 20 clean sheets in the process.

The France international also failed to assert his authority in the Spanish top flight as Valencia conceded a total of 65 league goals this season.

Newcastle are also reportedly willing to pay £10million for Brazilian midfielder Fernando, who has failed to convince new Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola this season.

The 29-year-old midfielder only started in five Premier League games this season compared to the 17 starts he made for the club last year.
