Paul Merson believes Manchester City need to sign four more defenders in the summer if they are to win anything next season.

Pep Guardiola’s side recently concluded the Premier League campaign by finishing in third spot which helped them secure a Champions League place.

The Spaniard, who was in his first season in charge at the Etihad Stadium, failed to win a trophy, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea landing the domestic honours.

TV pundit Merson believes City’s attack does not need much tweaking ahead of next season, with the likes of Leroy Sane, Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and David Silva the goalscorers and creative players in the side.

However, Merson thinks that City’s defence does need more quality if they are to lift any silverware under Guardiola next season.

“They need another four defenders if they want to win anything,” Merson told Sky Sports. “They’ve got no problem at all with their attack, their Achilles heel has been in defence.

Centre-back Vincent Kompany endured another injury-hit season but he did manage to start the last seven games of the campaign, helping his team secure five wins, four clean sheets added with his three goals.

As a result, he only played 11 Premier League matches for his side, with four more appearances in the League Cup and the FA Cup.

In his absence, big-money summer signing John Stones, Nicolás Otamendi and Aleksandar Kolarov were the players selected to start at the heart of the club’s defence.
