Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that not signing Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is one of the biggest “regrets” of his managerial career.

The 35-year-old midfielder participated in his testimonial match at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon and he marked the occasion with a stunning goal before being substituted to a standing ovation from the United faithful.

Speaking to Arsenal’s official club website, Wenger congratulated Carrick for what he has achieved in his footballing career and revealed that he regrets never having the opportunity to manage the Englishman.

“I would say personally I’m an admirer of his career, of his quality,” Wenger said.

“One of my regrets is never having had him as a player because I think he was one of the greatest players in English football.

“I believe as well that he did not always get the reward and the tribute, the recognition he deserved.

“But I’m an admirer of Michael and I wish him all the best for the future.”

Carrick signed for United in 2006 from Tottenham and he has enjoyed great success during his spell at Old Trafford.

The Englishman has won five Premier League titles, one Champions League, three League Cups, an FA Cup and the Europa League with the Manchester giants.

Under new manager Jose Mourinho, Carrick has played a crucial role in helping the side pick up two major trophies this season, making a total of 38 appearances in all competitions.

His only goal of the season came in the EFL Cup tie away at League One side Northampton Town.

Carrick decided to extend his deal with United for a further year which sees his contract run out at the end of next season.
