Manchester United have made initial enquiries about Everton goal-machine Romelu Lukaku, according to The Independent.

It is reported that Everton have set the price at a hefty £90million.

United manager Jose Mourinho is after a new proven Premier League scorer after losing Zlatan Ibrahimovic to a serious injury at the tail end of last season.

Lukaku finished with the second highest goal tally in the Premier League – 25 goals in 37 games – and was only beaten to the Golden Boot by Harry Kane after the Tottenham striker scored seven goals in his last two games.

If United were to complete the deal for the Belgian goal machine this summer, the mega-money fee could beat their record transfer fee of £89.3million that they paid Juventus for Paul Pogba.

Mourinho would be hoping for a more spectacular start to life at Old Trafford for Lukaku – Pogba had a disappointing start to his second stint at United with just five goals and four assists in 30 Premier League games.

United will also face stiff competition for Lukaku’s signature from league champions Chelsea, who are reported to have held positive talks with the striker.

One card United may have in their favour is Wayne Rooney, who they could offer as part payment for the Belgian striker.

The only drawback to this is Rooney’s wages – Everton are reportedly split as to whether he’s worth breaking the bank for.

With the striker looking almost certain to leave Goodison Park this summer, this is set to be one of the transfer deals of the transfer window.
