Terry Butcher has confidently stated that he would pick Celtic ace Scott Brown over Premier League great Paul Scholes.

The former Rangers man was speaking ahead of England’s clash against Scotland on Saturday which will take place at Hampden.

It is a crucial World Cup qualifier for both sides with Gareth Southgate’s team hoping to take a step closer to Russia while the Scot’s are hoping to keep their dreams alive for next summer’s World Cup.

Ahead of that match, Butcher and former Spurs man Joe Jordan were selecting the best English and Scottish players from the past to this current day.

When Scholes’ name came up against Brown, Jordan picked the former United man but Butcher, without any hesitation, went the other way.

“I’ll go with Scott Brown,” said Butcher as posted by STV Sport’s official Twitter account.

Scotland international Brown will be hoping to take to the field against England at the weekend following a successful domestic campaign with Celtic.

He captained Brendan Rodgers’ side to a domestic treble, with the Bhoys winning the Scottish Premiership, Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup.

As a result, they finished the 2016/17 season unbeaten, dropping points on only four occasions this term.

By contrast, Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles and two European Cups at Old Trafford, officially retired from the game in 2013.

The former England international is regarded as one of the greatest central midfielders of his generation, with his ability to control big games and pick out any type of pass.
