Arsenal are facing a battle to retain the services of prized young attacker Chris Willock this summer, according to the Standard.

The newspaper report that Manchester City are one of a number of top European clubs circling for the highly-rated 19-year-old, who has just weeks left to run on his current contract.

Willock, who earned two first-team appearances for Arsenal during the 2016-17 season, is currently in talks over a fresh agreement with the club, but time is fast running out to strike a deal.

The north London club face a deadline of June 30 to complete a new deal for Willock, otherwise the player will be free to depart the club on a free transfer, which could be good news for the sides coveting his services.

Premier League rivals Manchester City and Everton are understood to have been alerted to the situation, while European heavyweights Celtic and Borussia Dortmund are also keen.

Willock was in excellent form for Arsenal’s reserve side last season, contributing three goals and eight assists from 19 appearances, but he has found first-team opportunities limited.

His two senior appearances came during Arsenal’s EFL Cup run, where he managed a combined 25 minutes against Nottingham Forest and Reading.

But as a winger, competition for places in the Arsenal first-team squad is very high, and manager Arsene Wenger may need to convince his young star that committing his future to the club is the right move.

If Willock were to quit Arsenal this month, Arsenal would be entitled to compensation.
