Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard has revealed he chose the squad number 14 because Thierry Henry inspired him in his youth.

Henry played in the Arsenal number 14 jersey in his massively successful spell at the North Londoners.

In an interview with Metro, Lingard claimed it was the Gunners legend who influenced his choice of squad number.

“I just think it’s a great number to have. Obviously, Thierry Henry had it and he’s a great figure in football,” he said.

“He was a great goalscorer when I was younger. I used to look up to him and watch most of his goals so I think ‘14’ is a good number.’”

Lingard, 24, was a regular in United’s midfield last term, scoring five goals in 43 appearances in all competitions, as well as providing three assists.

He had been a part of the Red Devils’ academy his whole career, and he spent time on loan at Derby, Birmingham, Brighton and Leicester, before breaking into the senior set up in the summer of 2015.

The 24-year-old has since played 83 league and cup games for the club, which have yielded 11 goals and seven assists.

Lingard is able to play on the right-side of midfield, on the left, as an attacking midfielder and as a second striker.

He signed a new £100,000-a-week contract with his boyhood club in April, which ties his future to the north west until the summer of 2021.

The Warrington-born midfielder has been capped by England on four occasions, and he was an unused substitute as they drew 2-2 with Scotland on Saturday in a World Cup qualifier.
