Eunan O’Kane has revealed his disappointment at Garry Monk’s decision to resign from his position as Leeds manager.

Monk, 38, stepped down from his role in the managerial hotseat at Elland Road after talks broke down between himself and new owner Andrea Radrizzani over extending his contract with Leeds.

Speaking ahead of Ireland’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Austria on Sunday, Leeds midfielder O’Kane gave his honest opinion on the parting of company between his current side and Monk.

“It’s frustrating that they (Garry Monk & the club) haven’t been able to work it out,” O’Kane said, as quoted by EirSport’s official Twitter account.

The 26-year-old midfielder was brought to Elland Road last summer by Monk, signing a two-year deal with the Yorkshire giants after Leeds struck a deal to lure him from Premier League outfit Bournemouth.

O’Kane has endured a difficult spell with the former Champions League side, as Monk pushed the Whites towards a Championship play-off place only to miss out at the last hurdle and finish in seventh place.

The seven-time Ireland international managed just 26 league and cup appearances throughout the campaign, as he struggled to overcome a troublesome groin injury over the Christmas period.

Now, the former Torquay midfielder will look to rival captain Liam Bridcutt, and youngsters Ronaldo Vieira and Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the park for a place in the side next season.

Leeds’ number 14 will also be looking to add to his seven caps against Austria after failing to come off the substitutes’ bench during Ireland’s 3-1 win over Uruguay in a friendly last Sunday.
