Monk in contention to take charge at Southampton

|

Garry Monk is in the frame to take charge of Premier League side Southampton, according to a report in the Daily Star.

The newspaper claims that the 38-year-old is a shock contender to replace Claude Puel at St Mary’s as the club’s chiefs look to replace the 55-year-old in the dugout.

Monk quit his managerial post at Elland Road last month to the shock of owner Andrea Radrizzani and the supporters.

Now, the report details how Monk could make a quickfire return to management with Southampton, and he has his heart set on a return to a club he represented as a player.

Monk has been linked with the vacant Sunderland and Middlesbrough jobs but the Star report that he has “no interest” in taking charge of the Black Cats and any possible move to the Riverside is also on hold.

During his time in Yorkshire, Monk opted to play a 4-2-3-1 formation for the majority of the campaign and it is reported that the out-of-work manager thinks his style suits Southampton.

Frenchman Puel replaced Ronald Koeman at St Mary’s last summer after the Dutchman had decided to join their Premier League rivals, Everton.

During his first season in charge, Puel guided his side to a League Cup final where they suffered a controversial 3-2 defeat against Manchester United.

In the Premier League, the Saints struggled to find the back of the net, scoring 41 goals from their 38 matches, but they still managed to secure a top-eight finish.

By contrast, Monk narrowly missed out on helping Leeds finish in a play-off place, with four defeats in April resulting in his team dropping out of the top-six.
