Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has reinforced speculation linking Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny with a move to the club.

Sky Sports News claimed in a report on their official website earlier this month that Juventus had “agreed a deal in principle” worth £14million to sign the 27-year-old from Arsenal this summer.

The Poland international stopper has been strongly tipped to seal a move away from the Emirates, with a return to the Italian Serie A a high possibility, having spent the last two seasons on loan at AS Roma.

But with a potential move to the Serie A champions appearing no more than just speculation at this stage, current Juventus superstar Buffon has hinted that there is some truth behind the reports.

Buffon, 39, has been the undisputed number one at Juventus for an incredible 16 years, but could be set to hang up his boots in the near future and pave the way for the club to identify a successor, and he thinks Szczesny would be a fine choice.

Speaking ahead of Italy’s World Cup qualifier with Liechtenstein, he said, as quoted by the Mirror: “This could be the last year and I want to be a regular, as I have always dreamed of being.

“It’s right that Juve want Szczesny and that there is a good player like Donnarumma at the national team. For me, it will be a great motivation twice because, although I am 39-40 years, I have to maintain my place.

“If I no longer want to play, I’ll stay at home because Donnarumma and Szczesny are good goalkeepers by merit, not because someone gave them something.”

Szczesny is currently on international duty with the Poland national team, and is likely to return to Arsenal once his duties are complete next week.

However, Szczesny may only be set for a short-term stay at the Emirates this summer, as he faces fierce competition for a first-team role from current starter Petr Cech, as well as David Ospina.

With a potential move to Juventus reportedly gathering pace, Arsene Wenger looks set to cash-in on a player that has kept 72 clean sheets from 194 appearances in all competitions for the club.
