Rafa Benitez was a key figure behind Newcastle making an instant return to the Premier League when they won the Championship title during the recently concluded campaign.
Upon their return to the top tier, they will face a number of stern tests, and this is Futbol analyses which three players will be key to their success.
Dwight Gayle – Despite suffering a number of injuries in the Championship, Gayle still came out on top as Newcastle’s top marksmen. He provided a cutting edge to the club’s attack and Benitez will need to keep him fit if they are to do well.
Jonjo Shelvey – There are a number of players in the Newcastle squad who have Premier League experience and Shelvey is one of them. The former Liverpool player has proven in the top tier that on his day he can win a game on his own. The Magpies will encounter tough situations next season and they will need his control in midfield if they are to pick up the points.
Ciaran Clark – The former Aston Villa man will face a completely different test to the one he faced in the Championship. Centre-back Clark will have to contend with better players and better attacking teams in the top tier. The Republic of Ireland international is the most experienced of the Newcastle defenders and he will need to show his calmness if the Magpies are to keep those all-important clean sheets. If he can provide that then Benitez’ side have more of a chance of keeping a solid base at the back.
