Everton must tempt Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross into refusing to sign a new contract at the Britannia Stadium by luring him to Goodison Park instead.

Shawcross, 29, is entering the final 12 months of his current contract in Staffordshire with Mark Hughes’ side, which has raised doubts over his future in red and white stripes.

Speaking to local newspaper The Sentinel, chief executive Tony Scholes claimed that Shawcross’ contract situation is not an issue but did admit that contract talks can be a long, drawn out procedure.

“There’s nothing really to say on Ryan,” he said. “You want to do something sooner rather than later. But that is a very simple statement about what can be a very complicated and long process.”

This Is Futbol analyses three reasons why the former Manchester Unite defender should leave a year before completing a decade at Stoke, where he has clocked up 382 appearances.
