Everton have slapped a £20million-plus price tag on midfielder James McCarthy, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The newspaper claims that the Premier League side are willing to let the 26-year-old midfielder leave Goodison Park this summer but only for the right offer.

The report claims that Aston Villa have shown interest in the midfielder throughout the summer but a move to the Championship side looks highly unlikely as they will not able to match the asking price.

Villa reportedly still hold slim hope that they will be able to secure a loan deal for the midfielder.

It is reported that Villa need to sell players from the current squad in order to raise funds for potential arrivals this summer.

The Mail claims that the midfielder has already held talks with fellow Premier League side Burnley but he doesn’t fancy a move to Turf Moor.

West Bromwich Albion and newly-promoted side Newcastle United are also reportedly both interested in McCarthy this summer.

The midfielder did not enjoy a lot of game time last season with the Merseyside club as he struggled with a number of injuries.

The Republic of Ireland international only made a total of 13 appearances in all competitions last season – his lowest amount of matches played in a single season since joining the club four years ago.

McCarthy’s contract at Goodison Park expires in the summer of 2020.
