Celtic have made contact with Liverpool over a potential deal to sign Ryan Kent this summer, according to a reliable journalist.

The Sun reporter Alan Nixon revealed on his personal Twitter account on Sunday evening that Celtic had “asked” the Premier League club about a potential loan move for the young winger.

The 20-year-old joined Liverpool at the tender age of seven, and has emerged through the academy ranks into the U21 squad, but has yet to establish himself as an important figure in the first-team squad.

Kent has made just one senior appearance for the Merseyside club, appearing for 57 minutes as Liverpool drew 2-2 with Exeter City in the FA Cup third round in January last year.

But he has had more first-team success in the last two seasons after Liverpool granted him loan moves to Coventry City and most recently, Championship outfit Barnsley.

The England Under-20 international was a key figure at Oakwell last term, where he made 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and supplying three assists.

However, he could struggle to find regular first-team opportunities back at Anfield next season due to the fierce competition for places, and former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is reportedly waiting in the wings.

The Celtic chief has shown a preference for young talent throughout his managerial career, and is looking to continue the trend by adding Kent to his squad this summer on a temporary basis.

Last season’s Scottish treble winners are likely to be without impressive young winger Patrick Roberts, who returns to Manchester City following the expiry of his loan spell, and Rodgers could be eying Kent as a suitable alternative.

A move to Scotland could allow Kent to showcase his talents on the Champions League stage, whilst being re-united with his former Liverpool manager.
