Arsenal have opened contract talks with midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to a report in The Sun.

The newspaper claim that boss Arsene Wenger is keen to tie down the 23-year-old to stop him making a departure from the Emirates this summer.

The Sun revealed that Wenger is prepared to offer a huge six-figure wage package to the England international in order to prevent the midfielder moving to Premier League rivals Liverpool or Chelsea.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is known to be an admirer of the young midfielder, and was expected to make a move for the 27-time capped England star, while Chelsea were also keeping close tabs.

It is said that preliminary talks were held with the £30 million-rated midfielder to extend his current £70,000-a-week wage.

Although previous reports claimed that Wenger was ready to sell the Arsenal star, The Sun have now revealed that the Gunners’ boss is hoping to entice the Englishman with a fresh deal which would see Oxlade-Chamberlain pocket over £100,000 a week.

The 23-year-old joined the north London club from Southampton in 2011 for £11 million, and the England international is set to enter the last 12 months of his contract.

The former Southampton starlet looked to be debating a potential exit from the Emirates during the 2016/17 campaign after he struggled to find a permanent spot in Arsene Wenger’s squad.

The Ox started just 16 of the 29 Premier League matches he played for the Gunners last season and Wenger put players’ contract talks on hold while he was unsure of his future with the club.

Now the Frenchman has extended his reign at the club for a further two years, he has been able to turn his concentration to keeping players like Oxlade-Chamberlain.

It is said that the 67-year-old will now attempt to secure Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil’s futures with the club.
