Lloris: Tottenham learned from Champions League setback

|

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has praised his teammates for reacting in the right way following the disappointing Champions League campaign last season.

The North London club failed to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages last season as they finished third in their group which included Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow.

Spurs only managed to win two matches in the entire competition and they also experienced heartbreak in the Europa League when they were eliminated in the last 32 stage by Belgian side Gent.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the club captain reveals that although the Champions League performances were not up to standard, he is pleased with the way the team reacted in the Premier League.

“The only disappointment was the Champions League,” he said.

That was a strange campaign. It wasn’t Tottenham, it wasn’t our identity and we can have some regrets.

“The reaction of the team was fantastic, though, and step by step, we became stronger and stronger. That means we learned from our mistakes and that’s positive.”

Spurs managed to put the Champions League setback behind them and delivered some outstanding performances domestically which enabled them to secure a top two finish for the first time in the Premier League era.

Lloris was instrumental for the North London side last season, keeping 17 clean sheets in 43 appearances in all competitions.

The 30-year-old was one of the main reasons why Spurs managed to boast the best defensive record in the league for the second consecutive season.

Spurs are set to feature in the Champions League next season and they will be looking to progress to the knockout stages for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign.
