Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has expressed his surprise at the appointment of Thomas Christiansen as the club’s new manager.

Whelan took to his personal Twitter account on Friday to deliver his verdict on the appointment, whilst urging all Leeds fans to get behind their new manager and the team ahead of the new season.

He said: “Hi everyone I’m still alive. Yes new boss at the club, I wasn’t expecting him but now he’s there lets get behind him and the boys MOT.”

The Championship club announced on their official website on Thursday that Christiansen had agreed a deal to take over as manager at the club, following the resignation of Garry Monk last month.

Monk had walked away from his duties at Elland Road after just one year in charge, where he led the Yorkshire-based outfit to a seventh-placed finish in the league, their highest finish for a number of years.

His sudden departure, which rocked the club to its core, triggered a protracted saga as Leeds scanned far and wide for a suitable successor, but their search for new leadership has now been concluded.

Christiansen arrives from Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia, whom he led to the league title and the last-16 of the Europa League last season.

The 44-year-old also enjoyed a well-travelled professional career, where the Denmark-born Spanish international played as a striker for European giants Barcelona, as well as German outfit VFL Bochum.
