Sunderland hold Monk talks

|

Sunderland are confident of appointing Garry Monk as their new manager, according to the Northern Echo.

The north-east newspaper claim that officials from the recently relegated Premier League club have held talks with Monk about the managerial vacancy at their club.

The Northern Echo report that Sunderland are increasingly hopeful that Monk will choose their club ahead of his other main suitors Middlesbrough and Hull City.

It is said that Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain has spoken to Monk and his representatives and the 38-year-old has emerged asa strong contender despite interest in Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes and Preston’s Simon Grayson.

Black Cats owner Ellis Short is looking to sell his 100 per cent stake in the club and prize playing asset Jordan Pickford is widely expected to be sold to a Premier League club this summer as up to a dozen players leave due to their contractual situations.

Nevertheless, a new manager will still be able to call on proven Premier League performers Fabio Borini, Duncan Watmore, Lee Cattermole, Jack Rodwell and Lamine Kone as Sunderland aim to mount a promotion push.

The Northern Echo report there will also be money to spend on new additions and a large chunk of the Pickford money will be available to reinvest in new blood.

Monk is one of the most in-demand managers in the country after handing in his resignation at Leeds two weeks ago.

The former Swansea boss declined the chance to extend his contract at the Yorkshire giants by at least a further 12 months following talks with new sole owner Andrea Radrizzani.
