Former Spain international Victor Sanchez has emerged as the new favourite to become the next Leeds United manager, according to the latest betting odds.

Sky Bet priced the 41-year-old as 6/4 favourite for the vacant post on Sunday night, ahead of former favourite Alan Pardew, whose price has drifted to 5/2, and Reading boss Jaap Stam, who has odds of 3/1.

The trio are a long way clear in the betting of Leeds assistant manager Pep Clotet, who is 10/1.

Sanchez’s fellow Spaniard Aitor Karanka has also been heavily linked with the Leeds role following the appointment of his ex-Middlesbrough colleague Victor Orta as the director of football.

However, he is currently priced at 12/1 alongside Bradford boss Stuart McCall, just behind Clotet.

Ex Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Sanchez has held three managerial posts since bringing his playing days to an end in 2008 at Elche.

He has so far managed La Liga club Deportivo, where he was sacked after the team finished 15th in his only full season in charge, Greek giants Olympiacos and his most recent job at Real Betis, where he was dismissed in May for guiding the team to another 15th spot.

Earlier on Sunday, Sky Bet listed Alan Pardew as the 6/4 favourite, narrowly ahead of Stam, who was 15/8.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported on Saturday that the Reading manager has been identified by Elland Road owner Andrea Radrizzani as a leading candidate to replace Garry Monk.

It is said that Radrizzani is weighing up an approach to his club’s Championship rivals for permission to hold talks with Dutchman Stam, who is on the club’s four-man shortlist.

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani revealed on Twitter on Tuesday night that the club will start interviewing candidates for the vacant post this week as he insisted that time will be taken to find the correct candidate.

Monk resigned as Leeds manager 17 days ago and has subsequently been appointed as the new manager of recently relegated Middlesbrough.
