Odds tumble on Stam landing Leeds job

|

Jaap Stam has been installed by bookmakers as the new second joint favourite to become the new Leeds manager.

Sky Bet priced the Reading boss at 4/1 on Tuesday night to take over from his bitter rival Garry Monk, who resigned 12 days ago.

Stam, whose Reading side suffered Championship play-off final heartache when they lost on penalties to Huddersfield, is now level with Alan Pardew in the betting and behind only new favourite Claudio Ranieri, who is 5/2.

The odds have tumbled on ex-Manchester United defender Stam taking over from Monk in the last 24 hours, with his price at 10/1 on Monday.

It is unlikely that Leeds fans will be enamoured at the prospect of the Dutchman being strongly in the running to take the reins after he criticised them form goading his Reading side as “boring” in the wake of their defeat at Elland Road last December.

Monk subsequently said he was “embarrassed” for the outspoken Stam and the rivalry was stoked further in the return fixture at the Madejski Stadium, which ended in a 1-0 for Reading in April.

The Championship giants are looking for their eighth manager in four years after Monk handed in his resignation 12 days ago.

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani revealed on Twitter on Tuesday night that the club will start interviewing candidates for the vacant post later this week as he insisted that time will be taken to find the correct candidate.
