Leeds United have been tipped as a possible destination for Aspire-owned midfielder Mario Ortiz, according to a report by Leonoticias.

The Spanish digital newspaper claim that the Championship club are in the running to land the 28-year-old due after he signed a new two-year contract with Cultural Leonesa, a team owned by the Qatar-based Aspire foundation.

Lenoticias report that Spanish central midfielder Ortiz could end up playing for one of Leonesa, where he spent last season, another Aspire satellite team in Belgian top-flight outfit KAS Eupen or at Leeds.

The player’s registration is owned by Doha-based Aspire, whose general director is Ivan Bravo, the former Real Madrid chief who was recently appointed to the Leeds board of directors.

The Yorkshire club also appointed a Spanish director of football last week when Victor Orta was hired just days after he quit as Middlesbrough’s European recruitment chief in the wake of their relegation from the Premier League.

Ortiz, whose CV includes spells at Racing Santander, Espanyol and Albacete, was a mainstay of the Leonesa team that won promotion to the Spanish second flight in the recently completed domestic season.

The central midfielder made 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals during his 3875 minutes of action.
