Chris Kamara delivers verdict on Monk departure at Leeds

|

Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara believes Leeds United are in “travesty” following the sudden departure of manager Garry Monk last month.

Monk had been in talks with Leeds over an extended deal at the club, having led the Championship outfit to a seventh-placed finish in his debut season at Elland Road last term.

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani had planned to hand the 38-year-old a fresh 12-month extension, with his current deal set to expire this summer, only for talks to reach an impasse.

The former Swansea City manager left Leeds stunned when he tendered his resignation on May 25, but Kamara insists that Monk deserved better communication during his time at the club.

Speaking at Sky Sports colleague Jeff Stelling’s March for Men in Bradford, Kamara also admitted that Leeds need to appoint a new manager with the same ambition as the fans.

He said, as quoted by Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Thomas Feaheny on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday:

“The situation is a travesty. I know people will disagree but the manager needed more communication.

“I don’t blame Garry in any way shape or form for deciding his future was away from Leeds. It’s simple. Leeds are a big club because of their fans but the rest of the club needs people in charge who match the ambition.”

Monk has since landed on his feet and been appointed as the new manager at Championship rivals Middlesbrough, who have been on the hunt for a new full-time boss after Aitor Karanka was sacked in March.

His assistant Steve Agnew was put in temporary charge of first-team affairs until the end of the season, but Middlesbrough chose to pursue an alternative after he failed to save them from relegation.

Leeds, on the other hand, have still yet to appoint a successor to Monk, with a host of candidates already linked with the managerial vacancy at the Yorkshire-club.

Radrizzani had revealed on Twitter that he was set to interview candidates for the role last week, hinting that their hunt for a new chief was gathering pace.

But there has since been little movement, much to the frustration of the Leeds United fans.
