Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey wants boss Arsene Wenger to continue using a three-man defensive system next season, according to an interview in The Times.

The interview states that the Welshman wants the Arsenal manager to continue using a wing-back system to bring the best out of the squad as the club begin their 2017/18 campaign.

The Times interview revealed that Ramsey felt the new tactics gave him more freedom to be diverse on the pitch, making a stronger contribution to the team’s defence as well as making runs into the penalty area.

The Welsh international was quoted as saying: “That system suited us at Arsenal; it showed with the way we finished the season and winning the FA Cup in that formation.

“It gives us a lot more security defensively, [we are] not so suspect to counterattacks. But also it frees players up — and my game — to do more things, get into more dangerous positions. I’m confident it will [continue to be used].”

Wenger switched up the squad’s formation following a poor set of results throughout January and February when the Gunners suffered five defeats during eight league games.

Following the changes, Ramsey was able to net two goals for the club and they won the FA Cup and seven of their final eight league matches.

Ramsey proved his worth during the FA Cup final against Chelsea and made full use of his freedom within the squad which saw him net the winning goal for the Gunners.

Ramsey joined Arsenal back in 2008 and has grown under Wenger’s leadership, although he missed 22 games last season because of injury.
