Robles uncertain over Everton future

Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles has admitted he is unsure what the future holds for him at Goodison Park.

The 26-year-old played a regular first-team role under Ronald Koeman during the second half of the 2016-17 season, but could be set to fall down the pecking order amid growing speculation the Everton chief is after a new goalkeeper.

Robles still has one more year left to run on his current contract, having arrived from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid during the summer of 2013.

The Spaniard has fought valiantly alongside the experienced Maarten Stekelenburg for the No.1 jersey at Everton this season, but Koeman may be set to bring in a new first-choice stopper this summer.

The Sun claim that Everton have turned their attention to Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel, as they appear reluctant to meet the £30million asking-price for primary goalkeeper target, Jordan Pickford of Sunderland.

However, amid the speculation, Robles has admitted to IBTimesUK that he does not know what will happen beyond his current deal with Everton, and reveals he will need to sit down with club chiefs to discuss his role.

He said: “It has been a complete season on a personal level. I am quite happy with my performances. I played well and I think I have fulfilled the expectations.

“Now in the summer we will see what happens. I only have one year left on my contract and I have to sit down with the club to make a decision.

“I think I have to make a good decision. The truth is that I’m not very clear what will happen in the future. I have certain doubts.”

Robles began the season in his familiar role as deputy to Stekelenburg, but after his Dutch team-mate was sidelined with injury, Robles seized his opportunity.

He entered the fray as a first-half substitute during the 1-0 loss to Liverpool on December 19, but then started each of Everton’s next 16 league matches.

He kept 10 clean sheets from 20 Premier League appearances last season, as Everton achieved a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League.
