BBC pundit Alan Shearer has backed Wayne Rooney to make an ’emotional return’ to Everton this summer.

The 31-year-old is widely expected to leave Manchester United this summer having fallen down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, and the Premier League veteran has been linked with a return to Everton.

Rooney burst onto the Premier League scene as a teenager at Goodison Park, where he scored 15 goals from 71 appearances, and the Toffees remain one of the favourites to secure his services.

The England international is still under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2019, so it remains a possibility that Rooney will still be a Manchester United player next season.

However, Shearer believes Rooney will make an ’emotional return to where it all started’, despite keen reported interest from the lucrative Chinese Super League and the MLS.

He said, as quoted by BBC Radio 5 Live on their official Twitter account: “My guess would be an emotional return to where it all started, Everton.”

Rooney made 39 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring eight goals and supplying 10 assists, but just 26 of his appearances were in the starting eleven.

The Daily Mail have reported that Rooney is ‘seriously considering’ two offers from China, and has already discussed a move to the far East with his family.

But they also report that Everton are prepared to offer the attacker a deal worth £150,000-per-week to tempt him back to Merseyside.
