Mexican star Carlos Pena “is on his way to Glasgow” for face-to-face contract negotiations with Rangers, according to a Daily Record report.

The newspaper claims sources in Mexico have told them the attacking midfielder is making the trip to Scotland in an attempt to “finalise” a contract with Rangers.

It is said the 27-year-old will be offered a three-year deal at Rangers after negotiations with his parent club Chivas, who have said he can leave his loan club Leon and join the Glasgow giants.

Sky Sports Scotland reported on Monday that in order to complete the move Pena will have to get a work permit, because he has not represented his country since the 2016 Copa America.

Mexico legend Luis Garcia previously claimed the player would join the Gers this summer, and backed manager Pedro Caixinha to get the best out of him.

The Ibrox boss is well acquainted with Pena from his time as manager of Mexican outfit Santos Laguna from 2013 to 2015.

The 27-year-old has been on loan at Leon since January 2017, and has been a mainstay in their midfield since his arrival, making eight appearances, scoring two goals.

He has also been capped on 19 occasions by Mexico, scoring two goals, and he featured for the side in the 2014 World Cup.

Pena is known in Mexico as ‘Gullit’ because of his resemblance to Dutch legend Ruud Gullit.
