Liverpool are planning to hijack Manchester City’s move for Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy, according to RMC Sport.

The French news outlet claims that the Reds would be willing to splash £39.3million on the 22-year-old, which would smash their record transfer spend on Andy Carroll in 2011.

It is understood that Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Man City have began talks over a deal for Mendy and are willing to offer him a five-year contract.

RMC Sport claims there is no agreement as of yet between Monaco and Man City and that Manchester United and Chelsea are also willing to meet his valuation.

European giants Barcelona are also said to be in talks with the player, whose Monaco exit is expected to be announced within a matter of days.

Mendy has made 39 appearances in all competitions for the French champions this season, scoring once and supplying 11 assists.

The one-time France international, who earned his debut cap in March, has suffered with injuries over the course of the campaign but has still been a very imporant player in helping Monaco win the Ligue 1 title and progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

He began his career at Le Havre and began to make a name for himself at Marseille, who he left last summer for Monaco on a five-year deal.
