Chivas manager Matias Almeyda has admitted Carlos Pena’s move to Rangers is close to being completed.

The Daily Record had previously reported the Mexican ace was “on his way to Glasgow” for face-to-face talks with the Gers.

The 27-year-old has been on loan at Leon since January, but his parent club’s boss looks to have given his move to the Glasgow giants the green light.

Almeyda told the Scottish Sun: “I think it’s almost closed, ‘Gullit’ is going to be sold to Scottish football and hopefully he can have the experience of playing in another league and in another country. It will help [him] a lot to grow as a player and as a person.”

Pena is known in Mexico as ‘Gullit’ because of his resemblance to Dutch legend Ruud Gullit.

The newspaper also claims Rangers are “close to securing a work permit for Pena”, who will not join the club until next week.

It is said the Glasgow giants need “dispensation” from the Scottish Football Association and the UK Border Agency, but it is close to being granted.

The 27-year-old has been on loan at Leon since January 2017, and has made eight appearances for the club.

Prior to joining Javier Torrente’s side, he featured 15 times in the league and cup for his parent side this term.

He has also been capped on 19 occasions by Mexico, scoring two goals, and he featured for the side in the 2014 World Cup.
