Portuguese defender Bruno Alves is currently in Scotland negotiating a two-year deal with Scottish giants Rangers, according to a Sky Sports journalist.

Sky Sports Italy correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio has written on his personal website that the 35-year-old is set to leave Serie A side Cagliari in the summer and Rangers are on the brink of landing the defender for the next two years.

“The Portuguese defender is currently in Glasgow to negotiate with Rangers and a deal is expected to be reached on a two year contract,” he wrote.

He added that if terms were agreed, the Italian club would release the player from his contract.

This follows up from the report in the Glasgow Evening Times which claimed that Rangers are trying to bring the Portugal international into the club by the end of the week.

Alves has been an important part of the defensive set-up at Cagliari, making a total of 37 appearances in all competitions this season, securing four clean sheets.

His only goal of the season came in the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bologna in September.

Alves’ performances helped Cagliari finish in 11th place in the Serie A following their first season back in the Italian top flight division.

The defender was part of the Portugal national squad that won the European Championships in France last year – the first time Portugal had lifted a major trophy in their history.

Alves only featured in one game throughout the entire tournament but it came in the 2-0 semi-final victory against Wales.
