Aston Villa have been dealt a potential blow in their bid to offload midfielder Carles Gil this summer, according to El Ideal Gallego.

The Spanish news outlet claim that Deportivo La Coruna are interested in the 24-year-old, but may not be able to meet Villa’s demands due to their ‘delicate economic situation.’

Gil moved to Villa Park for £3.2million, and the Championship side are hoping to at least recover part of his initial transfer fee in any potential sale this summer.

The midfielder spent the duration of the 2016-17 campaign on loan at Deportivo, where he made 24 appearances in all competitions, and Aston Villa are looking to move him on again ahead of next season.

But Deportivo may not be able to afford to follow through with a permanent deal for the Spaniard due to their current financial situation, which may leave Aston Villa looking for an alternative destination.

However, it is also claimed by El Ideal Gallego that neither Deportivo nor Aston Villa have yet ruled out the possibility of an extended loan spell for the midfielder.

Spanish news outlet La Voz De Galicia, on the other hand, suggests that there are multiple other clubs willing to pay for Gil’s services, should Deportivo fail in their own attempts.

He has made just 34 appearances during his time with Aston Villa, but faces an uncertain future following his return to the club, after manager Steve Bruce added multiple midfield additions in his absence.

Gil was part of the Villa squad that were relegated from the Premier League in 2016, but Bruce has since added Henri Lansbury, Birkir Bjarnason and Conor Hourihane, who can all play in his midfield position.

He has two years left to run on his current contract at the Midlands club, but despite the potential Deportivo setback, it looks increasingly likely that he will be quitting the club in the coming months.
