Former Celtic ace John Hartson claims Adam Rooney could be the key man when Aberdeen face his former club in the Scottish Cup final.

The Dons are set to face Celtic at Hampden Park on Saturday afternoon in the cup final showdown.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have already wrapped up a domestic double this term, by winning the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish League Cup, but they are eyeing a historic treble.

Meanwhile Derek McInnes guided Aberdeen to their third successive second-place finish in the league this season, as they ended up nine points clear of Rangers in third.

Hartson has outlined which Dons players can hurt his former side, highlighting Rooney, 29, as the key man.

Writing in his Scottish Sun column, he said: “As much as I expect Celtic to win, I think it could be an entertaining game. Aberdeen are capable of attacking in different ways.

“They have quick-footed wide men like Niall McGinn and Hayes, with Kenny McLean on top form.

“If they want to go direct, Adam Rooney is a handful. That could be their key, if he can get himself in front of the Celtic centre-halves and hold the ball up.

“Jayden Stockley is another player I like the look of and he could cause problems if he’s given the chance.”

Rooney has been in prime form this term, scoring 20 goals in 52 league and cup appearances.

Last time the side’s met the Bhoys ran out 3-1 winners at Pittodrie as Dedryck Boyata, Stuart Armstrong and Leigh Griffiths all struck inside the opening 10 minutes.

Jonny Hayes pulled one back for McInness’ side, but the damager had already been done, and it had no bearing on the result.

Hartson spent five seasons at Parkhead and helped the club win three Scottish titles and two Scottish Cups during his time there.

He was also capped 52 times by Wales, scoring 14 goals.
