Young forward Dapo Mebude has signed his first professional contract with Rangers, he confirmed on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old attacker is highly-rated at the Glasgow giants and he has impressed the coaches at the club with his performances for the club’s age-group sides.

Mebude announced he had signed the deal on his personal Twitter account.

He wrote: “Happy to have signed my first professional contract with Rangers today, time to kick on.”

Mebude has played for Scotland at youth level and his commitment to the Ibrox club is welcome after the Scottish Sun reported that fellow starlet Billy Gilmour will join Premier League champions Chelsea next month.

Gers manager Pedro Caixinha is looking to strengthen all areas of his squad ahead of next season when he will hope to challenge Celtic, but it is unlikely the 16-year-old will be in his first team plans.

Rangers finished third in this season’s Scottish Premiership and reached the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup.

However, they lagged nine points behind second-placed Aberdeen come the end of the campaign, and 39 points adrift of champions Celtic.

The Portuguese boss has been linked with a number of players, but a Glasgow Evening Times report suggests the signing of Cagliari centre-back Bruno Alves could be completed “by the end of this week”.
