Former player Derek Johnstone believes that the signing of Aberdeen captain Ryan Jack would be a major coup for Rangers if they “manage to pull it off.”

The 25-year-old midfield enforcer has been heavily linked with a move to Ibrox since the season’s end and only last week the Sunday Post reported that the player was set to undergo a medical in regards to a move to the Glasgow giants.

Jack is the current captain of second placed Aberdeen and played a key part in helping the Dons finish nine points above the Gers in third.

However, with his contract set to expire at the end of this month it looks as though his future lies elsewhere and Johnstone has told that he has been encouraged by the names like Jack with being linked with a move to Glasgow.

“It is such a huge club, and as a player, if you can’t handle being in the limelight and having your every move dissected and scrutinised, then it is not the place for you,” wrote Johnstone in his column for the Evening Times.

“A lot of players can’t deal with that, but I fancy that Ryan Jack would be able to. He has been the Aberdeen captain from a young age, is now experienced and coming into the prime of his career, and he knows the game here inside out.

“On top of that, from a competitive point of view, taking one of the best players from one of your direct rivals has to be seen as a major coup if Rangers manage to pull it off.

“It is still early days in the summer, even though Rangers have games in just a few weeks’ time, but I’ve been encouraged by the names that have been touted for the club so far.”

Jack has played in 38 matches in all competitions for Aberdeen this season, returning two goals from his more defensive midfield position.

In total he has played in 249 matches for the club across seven years and would certainly bring a lot of experience to any possible destinations.

Rangers meanwhile will almost certainly be looking for a new central midfield player this summer with both Emerson Hyndman and Jon Toral returning to their parent clubs this summer.
