Jamie Redknapp has revealed that he feels sorry for Tottenham forward Vincent Janssen, but insists that he has failed to step up to the mark this season.

The 22-year-old completed a £17million move to Spurs in the summer from Dutch club AZ Alkmaar, where he had just scored 32 goals in a single season.

However, he has been unable to adjust to English football and failed to cement his position in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting line-up.

The Holland international managed just six goals in 38 appearances across all competitions for Spurs.

Redknapp has confessed that he feels sorry Janssen is behind prolific goalscorer Harry Kane in the pecking order, but acknowledged it has been a disappointing season for him.

“I feel sorry for him (Janssen) having to play second fiddle to Harry Kane but the Dutchman did not step up when called upon — unlike his team-mate Son Heung-min, who scored 21 goals in all competitions,” Redknapp wrote in the Mail.

Kane is regarded as the main striker for Spurs and scored 35 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions.

Meanwhile, Dele All, Heung-Min Son and Christina Eriksen have all chipped in heavily with goals in a very attack minded side.

Janssen has been unable to find his feet in English football during his first season and lacked composure in front of goal, but has been heavily backed by supporters despite his goal drought.

He has the physical strength to deal with the Premier League and has shown some glimpses of strong build up play.

Pochettino prefers to play with just one forward in his starting line-up, but he has shown during the closing weeks of the season a connection with teammate Kane.
