Paul Merson believes that Tottenham won’t win the Premier League next season because they will be playing their home matches at Wembley.

Spurs are going to play all of their home fixtures at the national stadium whilst construction work is taking place on their new White Hart Lane stadium.

Tottenham enjoyed an incredible final campaign at White Hart Lane as they remained unbeaten at home throughout the entire league season, winning 17 matches and drawing two.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men already had a taste of what it’s like to play at Wembley on a regular basis this season as they played at the stadium for their European home matches.

Tottenham struggled with the move and they lost the opening two Champions League matches at Wembley to eventual Ligue 1 champions Monaco and Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.

Spurs beat Russian side CSKA Moscow 3-1 in their final group stage game at Wembley but they had already been dumped out of the competition.

The poor form at Wembley continued into the Europa League as Tottenham were knocked out of the competition due to a 2-2 draw against Gent in the Round of 32 second leg.

As quoted on the Sky Sports website, former Arsenal player Paul Merson believes that despite performing brilliantly this season, the move to Wembley will hinder Tottenham’s title chances next year.

“They didn’t win the league but they were superb,” he said.

“If they weren’t moving away from White Hart Lane I think they would be champions next season.

“I don’t see that happening at Wembley though.”

Tottenham also endured FA Cup heartbreak at Wembley this season as they were beaten 4-2 by London rivals Chelsea at the semi-final stage of the competition.
