Tottenham could be handed a nightmare draw in the Champions League group stages next season despite securing a second consecutive season in Europe’s elite club competition, according to a report.

However, they stand a better chance of drawing an easier group if Manchester United suffer a defeat to Ajax in the Europa League final.

The Mail report that Spurs could be handed a nightmare test next season if they are seeded in pot three, but they will be elevated up into pot two if Ajax beat United in the Europa League final.

Spurs fans will be desperate to watch their English rivals lose to Ajax as it boost their own European chances for next year in the process.

Pochettino’s side could be dealt a number of horrible groups if they end up in pot three, with the possibility of drawing European heavyweights Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Roma.

Meanwhile, they could also get another difficult draw of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig.

The seeding for the four pots are still to be fully determined and a number of teams could swap during the qualifying rounds, but it appears Spurs’ strong performances this year have not guaranteed them a favourable route in Europe.

Spurs finished second in the Premier League this campaign with 86 points and were the only side providing real competition for title winners Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will go automatically into the group stages of the Champions League next season and will be looking for redemption after a poor effort this year.

The north London club were eliminated from a group containing Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow, before being dumped out by Belgian club Gent in the Europa League Round of 32.
