Former striker Les Ferdinand has backed Tottenham star Harry Kane to get better and better because he has the perfect mentality.

Kane, 23, only made his first-team breakthrough during the 2013-14 campaign, having spent time on loan across England’s football leagues, but he has swiftly become one of England and the Premier League’s leading figures.

He enjoyed short spells with Millwall, Leyton Orient, Norwich and Leicester City, but he now finds himself competing at the top level against the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City on a regular basis.

He scored 35 goals in all competitions last season, including a stunning eight goals from his final three appearances, which saw him finish as the division’s top goalscorer for the second successive campaign.

He has also hit more than 20 league goals in each of his last three seasons, capping off a meteoric rise for the English goalscorer.

But Ferdinand believes he can only continue to get better as a player, because he has the mentality of a player willing to improve his game.

He told ESPN: “Harry has got the mindset that he always wants to get better, he doesn’t want to simply do the same again.

“It’s a desire to improve and be the best he can possibly be. While he has that mentality, he will keep getting better.

“He picked up mettle from those loans and realised that he needed to do something differently. He gained a mentality and thought: ‘I need to do something to improve.”

Yet while he has done so on each time of asking, Kane does, however, face a very tough task to improve upon the 2016-17 campaign.

The top-class centre-forward has already netted 78 goals from 133 Premier League appearances, and has been challenged to break Alan Shearer’s goalscoring record of 260 goals.

Kane still has some way to go, but given he is still very much at the start of his career, there is no surprise why he has so far received such unanimous backing.
