Newcastle are in the running to sign Watford forward Troy Deeney, according to the latest betting odds.

Leading bookmaker Sky Bet have priced the 28-year-old Premier League striker at 7/1 to make a switch to St James’ Park before September 3, with West Brom leading the chase for his signature at 3/1.

Birmingham-born Deeney is the captain of Watford and he recently ended the league campaign with his side suffering six consecutive defeats under Walter Mazzarri, who has since departed the club and been replaced by Marco Silva.

By contrast, the Magpies earned promotion from the Championship after winning the title on the last day of the season under the stewardship of Rafa Benitez.

The north-east club’s top marksman is Dwight Gayle, who found the back of the net on 23 occasions this term despite suffering an injury-hit campaign.

Newcastle will make a return to the top-flight next season and there could be the possibility that Benitez could be looking to add quality and depth to his front line.

At this moment in time, Gayle, Daryl Murphy, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez are Newcastle’s recognised forwards, however, the last three only scored 18 league goals between them this term.

On the other hand, Deeney struck ten Premier League goals during his campaign, including against Albion in April, with the Midlands club favourite for his signature.

Denney, who has also played for Walsall during his career, has four-years left on his current deal at Vicarage Road.
