Newcastle target Jay Rodriguez could be in line for a summer move after his father hinted on Twitter that he may leave Southampton.

The Mail reported last month that the Magpies are interested in signing the 27-year-old following their promotion to the Premier League.

The report detailed that the one-time England international has grown frustrated at a lack of starts and is prepared to kickstart his career elsewhere, with Newcastle and West Brom in the running.

One Southampton fan took to Twitter to claim that Rodriguez’s career at St Mary’s is over and that he will leave in the summer.

Kiko Rodriguez, father of Jay, then responded on Twitter via his personal Twitter account and claimed “you might be right on one of those comment”.

Rodriguez’s father was unlikely to be agreeing that his son’s career Is finish and could well have been referring to a summer exit.

Newcastle may have received a transfer boost in their chase for the attacker and will be in the queue if he is made available.

Rafael Benitez is looking to improve his squad ahead of a top flight return and they may need some Premier League experience in the forward areas.

Rodriguez is a versatile attacker that can be used out wide or as a central strike.

The injury-prone Englishman has seen setbacks distrust his career when it was picking up speed, but he has proven this season his fitness for Claude Puel’s side.

He has managed to chip in with six goals this campaign in 34 appearances, but has proven he is capable of much more if given the game time.

Rodriguez was in red-hot form back in the 2013/14 season and managed 17 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions, something that Newcastle fans would be hoping he can recapture if he moved to St James’ Park.
