Newcastle are set for talks about signing Wes Morgan in the summer transfer window and he could become available if Leicester decide to amend their ageing squad, according to a report.

The Sun claim that the Magpies have made Leicester defender Morgan a priority as they look to improve their backline ahead of a Premier League return next season.

It is understood that manager Rafael Benitez has highlighted the experience of the Foxes captain as crucial and is set to open negotiations on a price.

The report details that Leicester could make the 33-year-old available in the summer if they plan to sign younger players.

Morgan has just two years remaining and lifted the Premier League title in dramatic fashion last season as the Midlands club defied the 5000/1 odds.

However, the Foxes squad is beginning to age and they may look to bring in some youth in the summer.

Leicester defenders Morgan, Robert Huth, Yohan Benalouane, Danny Simpson, Marcin Wasilewski and Christian Fuchs are all aged 30 or above.

Morgan has racked up 102 appearances in England’s top division and has played a major role in Leicester’s whirlwind story in recent years.

Benitez believes that his Newcastle squad need some experience following their promotion as title winners from the Championship.

The north-east club will be looking to retain their top-flight status on a return to the Premier League and want to add some defensive experience.

They currently have Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark as their man centre-back combination, while Chancel Mbemba and Grant Hanley provide cover.
