Christian Atsu could become Newcastle’s first signing in the summer, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky journalist Keith Downie claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Magpies are in talks with Chelsea for the 25-year-old attacker about a potential move.

It is understood they are discussing a potential £6.2million permanent deal following on from the winger’s loan spell at St James’ Park this season.

Atsu completed a season-long loan move to Newcastle last summer and helped them clinch promotion with the Championship title.

Manager Rafael Benitez is expected to undergo a busy summer window as he looks to improve his squad for a Premier League return.

Atsu could become the first of many signings for the north-east giants and they are already fully aware of his qualities.

The speed demon played an important role in the club’s campaign and particularly showed his form near the back-end of the season to get the club over the line for promotion.

He made 25 appearances across all competitions, scoring five goals and supplying three assists in return.

The Ghana international was used on both wings by Benitez and proved to be a useful player to have in the squad due to the physical demands of the hectic Championship schedule.

Atsu really came into his own in the final few weeks and scored back-to-back goals against Preston and Cardiff, including a spectacular free-kick.

He has been on the books with Chelsea since 2013, but is yet to make a first team appearance and has been loaned out to five different clubs so far.
