Newcastle are in a three-way battle to sign Udinese goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis, according to a report.

Italian outlet TuttoUdinese claim that the Magpies are keen on signing a new shot stopper in the summer ahead of their return to the Premier League.

It is understood that the north-east club will face competition from Watford and Crystal Palace for his signature.

The report details that Watford owner Gino Pozzi has valued Karnezis at £8.5million and feels that will be enough to secure his services.

Karnezis has been a strong performer this season for Italian club Udinese and helped them to mid-table in Serie A.

The 31-year-old has made 34 appearances across all competitions this season and kept eight clean sheets in return

He is also a regular for his homeland Greece and has 41 international caps to his name.

The shot stopper has already experienced the Italian, Spanish and Greek leagues in his career, but is yet to test himself in English football.

Newcastle have identified Karnezis as potential number one for next season, but their may have to be a major clearoue at St James’ Park beforehand.

They already have the likes of Rob Elliot, Matz Sels and Karl Darlow competing for the goalkeeper position, while Tim Krul and Freddie Woddman have both been loaned out this season.
