Newcastle are eyeing Burnley forward Ashley Barnes, according to a report.

ESPN claim that the Magpies are looking to improve their attacking options for next season and the 27-year-old has emerged as a potential target.

It is understood that manager Rafael Benitez is keen on bringing in players with Premier League experience and Barnes would fit the bill after helping the Clarets stay in the top flight this season.

The report details that Crystal Palace are also monitoring the striker as they look to bolster their frontline.

It is believed that Burnley are keen to keep hold of Barnes despite the interest and he still has two years remaining on his contract at Turf Moor.

Barnes has helped Sean Dyche’s side avoid relegation this season from the Premier League and has proven himself to be a strong performer in the top flight.

He has made 30 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying three assists in return.

Burnley have three competitive forwards in their squad and Barnes has fought for his position alongside teammates Andre Gray and Sam Vokes.

Newcastle achieved promotion back to the Premier League this season as they pipped Brighton to the Championship title.

Benitez will now be looking to assemble a side strong enough to stay in the division and he wants to add some extra ammunition in attack, despite 23-goal striker Dwight Gayle being their star man this season.
