Leeds should target Armstrong

Leeds should consider a summer transfer raid for Newcastle forward Adam Armstrong as the youngster will reportedly be available for a loan move.

The Coventry Telegraph claim that the 20-year-old will be made available in the summer for loan as Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez does not yet view him as a first team option.

The England Under-20 international has spent the last two consecutive seasons out on loan plying his trade, first in League One with Coventry, before experiencing Championship football with Barnsley this campaign.

The report details that Bradford could be interested in a potential move for the striker, while Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom is likely to look elsewhere.

Several people at Newcastle feel that the talented sensation has enough quality to play at St James’ Park next season, but Benitez is keen for him to continue his development elsewhere.

Leeds should enter the race to sign Armstrong as he could be a brilliant addition to their squad.

The Whites are in desperate need of extra attacking help to support talisman Chris Wood, who was relied on too heavily for goals this season.

Garry Monk needs to go out an recruit a striker to aid a promotion push next year and Newcastle’s youngster could improve the squad.

Armstrong managed six goals and supplied four assists during his spell at Barnsley, showing real signs of his quality at Oakwell.

He will be disappointed that he was unable to cement his position in the starting XI, but he proved that he can score goals in the Championship and would only improve at Elland Road next year.

Meanwhile, his loan spell the previous year at Coventry was particularly impressive as he struck 20 goals in just 40 appearances.
