Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett has angered Wales national manager Chris Coleman with his decision to retire from international football.

Wales are currently third in their World Cup qualifying group and they face a massive game on June 11 as they travelling to table topping Serbia.

As quoted on the BBC Football website, Coleman revealed that the 25-year-old defender didn’t even speak to him personally about the decision and he admitted that it was a loss for the national team.

“He doesn’t want to play international football which is a disappointment from our point of view,” Coleman said.

“But he’s made that decision, and we have to abide by that.”

“There’s nothing we can do with Paul who’s decided that international football is not the path he wants to go down.”

“It’s a shame because he’s a good player. I haven’t spoken to Paul. His agent rang me up to give me the news.

“I was disappointed, but if he doesn’t want to persevere with it then that’s his choice. We’ve got to look after the players who want to play for us”.

Dummett only played in two friendly matches during his short career with the national team which started in 2014.

The defender was used as a substitute in both games as Wales lost to the Netherlands at the Amsterdam ArenA in 2014 and once again at the Cardiff City Stadium the following year.

Dummett was named in the original 29-man squad for the 2016 European Championships in France but he failed to make the final cut.

Chris Coleman’s side didn’t appear to miss his presence as they advanced to the semi-final stage of the competition for the first time in their history where they were beaten by eventual winners Portugal.

Dummett has been involved with Wales in this season’s World Cup qualifiers but he still hasn’t played a single minute of competitive international football.

The 25-year-old has been a colossus with Newcastle United this season as his performances helped the Magpies achieve automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
