Thierry Henry believes that Tottenham must break their tradition and spend big in the summer transfer window if they are to close the gap to title winners Chelsea next season.

Spurs finished this year second in the Premier League and have now qualified for the Champions League in back-to-back seasons.

Mauricio Pochettino has built a formidable squad at the north London club and they are currently regarded as one of the outstanding teams in the division.

However, chairman Daniel Levy is known to be cautious with his transfer spending and Henry feels that needs to change to keep them competing against elite clubs.

All of the Premier League giants are expected to invest heavily with new recruits in the summer and Spurs may need to go the same away to stay in touch.

“Are they going to spend big in a transfer market?” Henry told Sky Sports. “That is not very like Tottenham if I can say it, but they are going to have to do it if they are going to compete against the top team and close that gap with Chelsea.”

Pochettino did bring in several recruits last summer, but £11million Victor Wanyama was the only major success.

Meanwhile, Moussa Sissoko (£30m), Vincent Janssen (£17m) and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou (£11m) struggled to make the desired impact.

However, they may need to spend even more in the upcoming window to stay in touch with the elite sides and improve their strong team.

Spurs may need a more reliable back-up to striker Harry Kane next season, while they could still lose some key players as their first team stars are linked with potential moves.
