Pearson set to land Boro job ahead of Monk

Nigel Pearson is set to land the Middlesbrough manager’s job ahead of Garry Monk, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim former Leicester and Derby boss Pearson is well placed to be appointed by Boro following their relegation from the Premier League.

The Sun report that both Pearson and Monk, who quit as Leeds manager on Thursday, will be interviewed for the vacant post by long-standing chairman of the north-east club, Steve Gibson.

It is said that Steve Agnew, who was appointed interim manager following the sacking of Aitor Karanka in March, is also in line for talks with Gibson.

The north-east outfit are targeting instant promotion to the Premier League as they prepare for what they hope will only be one season in the Championship.

Gibson is reportedly in no rush to make an appointment despite Monk’s sudden availability.

Leeds were keen to keep Monk for another 12 months and chairman Andrea Radrizzani has subsequently said on social media he envisaged offering the 38-year-old a three-year deal.

But Monk released a statement to explain that the two parties could not reach an agreement amid speculation he was privately convinced that Radrizzani wanted him in the medium term.
