Manchester United are preparing a bid for Ross Barkley.

According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Jose Mourinho tried to take the Everton midfielder to Chelsea and is ready to rekindle that interest.

Barkley has had an eventful season, highlighted by the events of the last week, and is out of contract at the end of next season.

Ronald Koeman dropped the midfielder earlier this season and questioned his ambitions but Everton have now offered the 23-year-old a deal worth more than £100,000/week.

Rather than allow the midfielder to run down the final year of his contract Everton will sell Barkley in the summer to allow Koeman to move on with his task of rejuvenating the side to challenge for a Champions League.

Spurs were linked with Barkley before Christmas but if an offer came in from Manchester United the midfielder could follow in the footsteps of Wayne Rooney to Old Trafford. For a fee in the region of £25m in light of the time left on his contract.
