Southampton are lining up a bid for Mamadou Sakho.

According to a report in the Daily Mirror the Liverpool defender could be on his way to St Mary’s.

Sakho has impressed on loan at Crystal Palace but Sam Allardyce has already admitted that a permanent deal is outwith his capabilities.

The defender was sent home early from Liverpool’s pre-season tour by Jugen Klopp and cold shouldered until his January loan deal.

Liverpool paid Paris St Germain £18m for the defender in 2013 and will be looking for at least £20m when Sakho moves on.

Southampton can afford that sort of fee, and the wages that will go with it, after years of careful buying and selling.

Putting Sakho and Virgil van Dijk together would create a formidable defensive partnership although the cynics will claim that the Liverpool man is being brought in to replace van Dijk rather than partner the Dutchman.
