Chris Smalling will be allowed to leave Manchester United in order to make way for Victor Lindelof.

According to a report in The Express the England defender will drop further down the pecking order once the documents are finalised for Lindelof’s transfer from Benfica.

Smalling has already been eased out of the picture with Phil Jones catching the eye of Jose Mourinho.

The 27-year-old moved from Fulham to Manchester United in 2010 but will have to consider a move away from Old Trafford if he is to continue his England career.

There would be no shortage of offers for Smalling with United hopeful of picking up close to £30m which would cover a significant chunk of the Lindelof fee.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman is hoping to bring in a new centre half and has made enquiries about the availability of a number of players at United half a dozen players

With Marcos Rojo, Jones and Eric Bailly competing for places in the starting XI Smalling has only started five Premier League matches under Mourinho.
